# CORDOVA: Behind the Name
Like most of the towns in the Province of Cebu,
Cordova also got its name after a place in Spain. It was Governor
General Rafael Echague who created this town (composed of the barrios of
Gabi, Day-as, and Pilipul) on May 22, 1863. He chose the name Cordova
which means "stark nakedness and bare". Spain, Mexico and Argentina
and the six states of the United States of America - Alaska, South
Carolina, Illinois, Alabama, New Mexico, & Tennessee have cities
also named Cordova.
The creation of Cordova into a separate Municipality
in 1863 was short-lived. When the Americans replaced the Spaniards,
Cordova was re-absorbed by the Municipality
of Opon, now Lapu-Lapu City. On January 01, 1913, Cordova became a
Municipality again by virtue of Orden Ejecutiva Numero 96 issued by US
Governor General Newton W. Gilbert on December 17, 1912 recreating the new town but changing letter "B" to letter "V" to spell CORDOVA. Thus, CORDOVA became a separate municipality again with Bernardo Nunez as its first Municipal President and Lucas Jumao-as its Vice-President.
Local and foriegn tourists visit our "Kamampay Beach", located at Buagsong,Cordova, Cebu. A nice place to relax and to enjoy fresh seafood dishes such as shrimps, crabs, "danggit", "nokus", "bakasi",and a lot more. Bakasi is cooked and eaten in a variety of ways. But most men crave for that "Nilarang na Bakasi or bakasi stew, a delectable dish which is believe to be an aphrodisiac.

Everybody knows King Lapu-Lapu in the battle of Mactan but only very few know Cordova's very own Hero. In 1898 when Andres Bonifacio revolted against Spain, Cordoba's Directorcillo, Juan Nunez (aided by Pablo Biongcog), was the distributor of Bonifacio's cedulas to Cordova residents. He was caught. Nunez and Biongcog admitted full responsibility for their activities and saved no less than 40 Cordoba residents from execution. Only they got executed on October 15, 1898.
Juan Nunez was Cordoba's hero in the 1898 Philippine Revolution together with Biongcog.
The efforts bore fruits thanks to the exemplary performance of Bernardo Nunez (son of 1898 hero Juan Nunez) who petitioned the Philippines Assembly for CORDOBA's independence.
The festivity, which is a dance-drama depicting the fishing culture of the Cordovanhons is the main highlight of the Annual Feista of the Municipality of Cordova in honor of the Miraculous Patron Saint, Sr. San Rogue. Celebrated every August of each year, the Festival starts with agrand parade and culminates at the Cordova Sports and Cultural Center for a dance showdown. Cordova Dinagat Festival started to amuse the local and foreign spectaculators since 1999.

"CORDOVA FREEDOM PLAZA"
The Cordova Freeedom Plaza (located directly in front of the San Roque Parish Church) is plainly a resting and a strolling place but to a true-blooded Cordovanhon, the plaza stood as a living witness of the heroic deed of two of Cordova's hereos: Juan Nunez and Pablo Biongcog who lost their lives during the Japanese occupation.
